Basic Class D amplifier

Class-D amplifiers are very common in audio applications due to the low quantities of components needed, high-power output, and good thermal performance. This block diagram is a basic overview of the class-D amplifiers in the market.

/ Enhancing Sound, Simplifying BOMs

For audio enthusiasts, class-D amplifiers provide a host of advantages compared to class-AB amplifiers. Also called switching amplifiers, class-D amps use less power and generate less heat. They’re also smaller in package size and have high power capacity. In class-D amplifiers, MOSFETs and other transistors act as switches rather than linear gain devices. EMI and sound quality should be carefully considered when specifying components.

/ Application Considerations

When designing class-D amplifiers, engineers should take the following into account:

System cost
Quality of the sound
EMI and transient protection
Output-stage protection
High-current capability
